Fuelling Employment Generation through Cluster Development
Handloom, Handicraft and Natural resources

Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM) is an initiative of the Department of Industries & Commerce, Government of Tripura to promote and develop the bamboo based industries and enable livelihood generation through bamboo based activities. We have been engaged as the project implementation agency since April 2007 to conceptualise and implement the project. Based on a “Farm to Market” approach, TBM aims to optimise the end-to-end value chain spanning from plantation and resource generation to marketing of value added finished products

The TBM focuses on building highly competitive clusters leading to an agglomerated economy of bamboo-based products that ranges from bamboo based handicrafts, furniture, sticks & blinds to higher valued added technology intensive industrial applications of bamboo. The mission has a special focus on promoting sustainable livelihoods for the rural poor by strengthening their own grassroots enterprises through building mainstream market linkages, providing production infrastructure and technology, supporting design and skill development, facilitating credit linkages.

The initiative has led to substantial increase in the turnover of the bamboo sector from INR 27 crores to over INR 100 crores. Over 45,000 poor artisans and farmers have been trained and supported to take up various value-added enterprises in the bamboo sector. Under the TBM program over 20 community-owned production centres have been setup

Each of these are specialised in production of specific home utility products. The centres are equipped with modern machinery and owned and managed by a team of highly skilled local craftsmen. With adequate training and design development support, these centres have been able to produce and market world class bamboo based products and accessories both in leading domestic and export markets
